Vintage Viands!

Good morning everyone,

It’s almost time for our annual Vintage Viands event! The past three events have been amazing, all thanks to the cooks and volunteers who helped us out! We so appreciate you guys and need to call on you again this year. If you haven’t heard, this is going to be a huge year for Vintage Viands and we are so humbled by this opportunity to spread this fun event to the community around us. Vintage Viands will be appearing in the September issue of Our State magazine (published mid-August) and we are hoping that this will lead people from our community to our library, collection, and event. We are so excited about this opportunity to show what our library can do when we get together.

Please consider signing up to prepare food and/or volunteer for the event (be sure to ask your supervisor first). With the added publicity to the community we are expecting more people which means we want to have plenty of food everyone to sample. We want you all there because you are the face of the library and the community needs to see what you guys are made of!

Now, down to the details. The event will be Friday, September 22, 2017 from 12:00-2:00 in the first floor reading room near the DVDs. This year we are breaking our past traditional theme of a specific decade, and broadening it to “North Carolina”. We have a few items digitized online (and will soon have an interactive map with scans from each county, so stay tuned for that), but the library recently received a donation of over 900 North Carolina cookbooks that we want to make available.

For those counties with a copyrighted cookbook, or if you just want to be more hands-on, we are going to have four opportunities for you to not only see a handful of these cookbooks, but to also make a recipe selection if you would like to make something. We will have the form for you to fill out right there and you will be able to scan the recipe and email it to yourself and Erica.

Recipe and Information Events

Wednesday August 10th Hodges Reading Room

  • 10 – 11 AM
  • 2 – 3 PM

Wednesday September 6th Hodges Reading Room

  • 10 – 11 AM
  • 2 – 3 PM

Can’t make it to an event? Visit the libguide for the digitized items or email: to set up a time to visit the SCUA Researcher Room. SCUA has a scanner that you can use for scanning and emailing your recipe to both Erica and yourself.

The idea is that we make this event truly representative of North Carolina cooking. We are going to put out one cookbook from each county and ask that you pick your recipe[s] from a county. The plan is to have as many counties as possible represented at the event. We would love you to come hang out, ask questions, and take a look at some of these awesome cookbooks. If you can’t make it to the recipe picking events, you can access the digitized materials or stop by the SCUA researcher room at a time more convenient for you.

If you would like to go ahead and submit your recipe from the items already online, please fill out the Google Form here:

There will be money for ingredient reimbursements thanks to donor funds and information on how to receive it will be forthcoming.

Please have your recipes selected by September 8th! If you want to see the physical cookbooks but can’t make it to any of the recipe selection events, please get in contact with Carolyn.
